The hundred-percenter easily swallows syndicated information and factory-made ideas and beliefs. He thrives on the wisdom given him over the radio and cheap magazines by corporations whose philanthropic aim is selling America out. He accepts the standards of conduct and art in the same breath with the advertising of chewing gum, toothpaste, and shoe polish. Even songs are turned out like buttons or automobile tires--all cast from the same mold." "لطالما قيل لي إن دستور الولايات المتحدة ضمانة كافية لحرية مواطنيها. ومن الواضح أن الحرية التي يدعي كفالتها محدودة للغاية. لم أقتنع قط بمدى كفاية هذه الضمانة. فأمم العالم، وعلى عاتقها قرون من القانون الدولي، لم تتردد يومًا في الانخراط في دمار شامل رغم تعهداتها الجادة بصون السلم؛ والوثائق القانونية في أمريكا لم تمنع الولايات المتحدة من أن تحذو حذوها. أصحاب السلطة أساءوا وسيسيئون دائمًا استخدام نفوذهم، والحالات التي لا يفعلون فيها ذلك نادرة كنبت الورد على الجبال الجليدية. فبدلًا من أن يلعب الدستور أي دور تحريري في حياة الشعب الأمريكي، فقد جرّدهم من القدرة على الاعتماد على ذواتهم أو التفكير المستقل. ينخدع الأمريكيون بسهولة بقدسية القانون والسلطة. بل إن نمط الحياة غدا نمطيًا ومبرمجًا وميكانيكيًا كالمعلبات وخطب الأحد. يبتلع المواطن المذعن كليًا المعلومات الموحدة والأفكار والمعتقدات المصنعة. يتغذى على الحكمة التي تُبث إليه عبر الراديو والمجلات الرخيصة من شركات غايتها "الخيرية" بيع أمريكا بثمن بخس. يتقبل معايير السلوك والفن بنفس السهولة التي يتقبل بها دعايات العلكة ومعجون الأسنان وملمع الأحذية. حتى الأغاني تُصاغ كالأزرار أو إطارات السيارات، كلها مصبوبة من القالب نفسه."

"There is no method of self-knowledge. Seeking a method invariably implies the desire to attain some result – and that is what we all want. We follow authority – if not that of a person, then of a system, of an ideology – because we want a result that will be satisfactory, which will give us security. We really do not want to understand ourselves, our impulses and reactions, the whole process of our thinking, the conscious as well as the unconscious; we would rather pursue a system that assures us of a result. But the pursuit of a system is invariably the outcome of our desire for security, for certainty, and the result is obviously not the understand of oneself., When we follow a method, we must have authorities – the teacher, the guru, the savior, the Master – who will guarantee us what we desire, and surely that is not the way of self-knowledge. Authority prevents the understanding of oneself, does it not? Under the shelter of an authority, a guide, you may have temporarily a sense of security, a sense of well-being, but that is not the understanding of the total process of oneself. Authority in its very nature prevents the full awareness of oneself and therefore ultimately destroys freedom; in freedom alone can there be creativeness. There can be creativeness only through self-knowledge." "ليس لمعرفة الذات منهج. فالسعي وراء منهج يستلزم حتماً الرغبة في بلوغ نتيجة ما، وهذا ما نصبو إليه جميعاً. نتبع السلطة – سواء كانت سلطة شخص، أو نظام، أو أيديولوجيا – لأننا نبتغي نتيجة مرضية تمنحنا الأمان. نحن في الحقيقة لا نرغب في فهم ذواتنا، دوافعنا وردود أفعالنا، مجمل عملية تفكيرنا، الواعي منها واللاواعي؛ بل نفضل اتباع نظام يضمن لنا نتيجة. لكن السعي وراء نظام هو حتماً نتاج رغبتنا في الأمان واليقين، والنتيجة بديهياً ليست فهم الذات. عندما نتبع منهجاً، لا بد أن تكون لدينا سلطات – المعلم، المرشد، المخلص، السيد – تضمن لنا ما نرغب فيه، وبالتأكيد ليس هذا سبيل معرفة الذات. السلطة تحول دون فهم الذات، أليس كذلك؟ في ظل سلطة أو مرشد، قد تشعر مؤقتاً بالأمان والراحة، لكن ذلك ليس إدراكاً للعملية الكلية للذات. السلطة بطبيعتها تمنع الوعي الكامل بالذات، وبالتالي تدمر الحرية في نهاية المطاف؛ وفي الحرية وحدها يكمن الإبداع. ولا يمكن أن يكون الإبداع إلا من خلال معرفة الذات."
