"ولكن ماذا عن التناقض الظاهري لفكرة الكرامة والحرية والعقل، وهي أفكار تُصان وتُدعم بانضباط عسكري بالغ الشدة، يشمل حتى ممارسة التخلص من الأطفال الضعفاء؟ هذا "التناقض" ليس سوى ثمن الحرية – فالحرية ليست مجانية، كما قيل في فيلم [300]. الحرية ليست هبة تُمنح، بل تُستعاد عبر كفاح مرير يجب أن يكون المرء فيه مستعدًا للمخاطرة بكل شيء. إن الانضباط العسكري الإسبرطي القاسي ليس مجرد نقيض "الديمقراطية الليبرالية" الأثينية، بل هو شرطها الجوهري، وهو الذي يضع أساسها: فالذات الحرة العاقلة لا يمكن أن تبرز إلا من خلال انضباط ذاتي قاسٍ. الحرية الحقيقية ليست حرية اختيار يُمارس من مسافة آمنة، كالاختيار بين كعكة الفراولة وكعكة الشوكولاتة؛ بل تتداخل الحرية الحقيقية مع الضرورة، فيُقدم المرء على اختيار حر حقًا عندما يضع خياره وجوده ذاته على المحك – يفعل ذلك لأنه ببساطة "لا يستطيع أن يفعل غير ذلك". عندما تكون بلاد المرء تحت الاحتلال الأجنبي ويدعوه قائد مقاومة للانضمام إلى الكفاح ضد المحتلين، لا يكون السبب المقدم هو "أنت حر في الاختيار"، بل: "ألا ترى أن هذا هو الشيء الوحيد الذي يمكنك فعله إذا أردت صون كرامتك؟"
